General
6 questionsIs Convertly really free?
Yes. Everything is completely free with unlimited usage — no daily limits, no conversion credits, no watermarks, no subscriptions, no premium tiers. We're supported by ads and optional donations from users who find the tools helpful.
Do I need to sign up or create an account?
No. Convertly requires no signup, no registration, and no email address. Simply visit the tool page, upload your file, and download the converted result. You can use every free tool without any account.
How is Convertly different from CloudConvert or Convertio?
The biggest difference is privacy. CloudConvert, Convertio, Zamzar, Smallpdf, iLovePDF and most other converters upload your files to their servers for processing. Convertly runs conversions directly in your browser — your files never leave your device. Additionally, we offer unlimited free conversions with no daily limits, no watermarks, and no signup required.
Does Convertly work on mobile devices?
Yes. Convertly is fully browser-based and works on all devices — desktop, laptop, tablet, and mobile. There's nothing to download or install. Our interface is optimized for screens from 358px to 1920px wide.
Can I use Convertly offline?
Most client-side tools work offline once the page is loaded, since processing happens in your browser. However, you need an internet connection to initially load the tool page and its required libraries.
How is Convertly supported if it's free?
Convertly is supported by privacy-respecting advertisements displayed on free tool pages and optional donations from users who find the tools helpful. We do not sell user data — there is no user data to sell since we don't collect personal information or track what you convert.
Privacy & Security
5 questionsAre my files uploaded to a server?
No. Convertly processes most conversions entirely in your browser using client-side technologies like Canvas API, Web Audio API, FFmpeg.wasm, and JavaScript. Your files never get uploaded to any server. For a small number of complex formats that require server-side processing, we clearly label those tools and delete files immediately after conversion.
Do you store my files after conversion?
Never. For client-side tools, your files never leave your browser in the first place. For the few tools that require server-side processing, files are deleted immediately after conversion and are never stored or accessed beyond the conversion process.
Do you track what files I convert?
No. We do not track which tools you use or what files you convert. We collect only basic, anonymous, privacy-respecting analytics (page views) necessary to operate the service. No personal information is collected — no account, no email, no name.
Is it safe to use Convertly for sensitive or confidential files?
Yes. Since most conversions happen entirely in your browser, your files never leave your device. This makes Convertly ideal for converting sensitive documents, personal photos, or confidential business files. Your data stays private because it never gets transmitted anywhere.
Do you use cookies or tracking?
Convertly uses a single localStorage entry to remember your theme preference (light or dark mode). We do not use tracking cookies, advertising cookies, or third-party cookies. Any ads shown are privacy-respecting and do not have access to your files or conversion data.
Tools & Conversion
6 questionsWhat file formats are supported?
Convertly supports 70+ file formats across documents (PDF, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, EPUB, HTML), images (HEIC, WebP, SVG, ICO, PNG, JPG), audio (MP3, WAV, AAC), video (MOV, MP4, WebM, GIF), data (JSON, CSV, XML, YAML, SQL), and archives (ZIP, RAR, 7Z, TAR). With 2,500+ conversion combinations, we cover virtually every format pair.
Is there a file size limit?
For client-side tools, there are no artificial file size limits — the only constraint is your device's available memory (RAM). Most browser-based converters can handle files up to several hundred megabytes or more, depending on your hardware.
Can I convert multiple files at once?
Yes, our converter supports batch processing. Simply drag and drop multiple files onto the tool area, and they will all be converted simultaneously. You can download them individually or as a ZIP archive.
Are there watermarks on converted files?
No. Convertly never adds watermarks to your converted files. All conversions are clean and complete — no branding, no logos, no "converted by" tags. Your output file looks exactly as it should.
Will my converted file maintain the same quality?
Convertly preserves the highest possible quality during conversion. For lossless formats (like PNG to PNG or document conversions), quality is preserved exactly. For lossy formats (like JPG or MP3), we use the highest quality settings by default. Some format changes inherently involve compression, but we minimize any quality loss.
Can I convert password-protected files?
For most document formats, you can convert password-protected files by entering the password when prompted. The conversion happens in your browser, so your password is never transmitted anywhere. However, some formats may have limitations depending on the encryption method used.
Technical
6 questionsHow does browser-based conversion work?
Convertly uses modern browser technologies to process files locally. When you upload a file, it's read into your browser's memory using JavaScript. Then, depending on the file type, we use technologies like the Canvas API for images, FFmpeg compiled to WebAssembly for video and audio, pdf-lib and pdf.js for documents, and JavaScript for data formats. The converted file is generated entirely in your browser and offered as a download.
What technologies does Convertly use?
Convertly leverages several modern browser technologies: Canvas API for image conversion and rendering, FFmpeg.wasm for video and audio conversion, Web Audio API for audio processing, pdf-lib and pdf.js for document conversion, JavaScript for data format conversion (JSON, CSV, XML, YAML), and client-side ZIP libraries for archive extraction and compression.
Why does conversion sometimes take longer?
Conversion speed depends on your device's processing power and available memory. Large files, complex format conversions (especially video), or converting many files at once can take longer. Since processing happens in your browser, a faster computer with more RAM will convert files more quickly. Server-side tools may also take longer due to network transfer.
Do I need to install any software or plugins?
No. Convertly runs entirely in your web browser. There's nothing to download, install, or update. As long as you have a modern browser with JavaScript enabled, you can use all of our conversion tools. FFmpeg and other processing libraries are loaded automatically when needed.
Which browsers are supported?
Convertly works on all modern browsers including Chrome, Firefox, Safari, Edge, and Opera. We recommend using the latest version of your browser for the best performance and compatibility. Some advanced features like FFmpeg.wasm require WebAssembly support, which is available in all browsers released after 2017.
What happens if a conversion fails?
If a conversion fails, you'll see an error message explaining what went wrong. Common causes include corrupted source files, unsupported format combinations, or insufficient memory for very large files. Try refreshing the page, using a smaller file, or trying a different browser. If the problem persists, contact us and we'll help troubleshoot.
